File links

File links can be used to make content available for download.

If a visitor clicks on such a link, he can download this file.

First, the creation of download lists and then that of file collections is shown.

Example

Dynamically create download lists (with file links)

So that lists for download links do not have to be maintained manually, Typo3 offers the content element "File links".

You can either directly pass a selection of files to this element, for which it takes over the output of the list, or create a so-called file collection (dynamic download list), which is displayed by the content element "File links".

The following video will additionally support you in using "File links".

(with friendly permission of  jweiland.net)

instruction

1. Within the file lists in the page tree, create a folder and add the files you want to make available.

2. Now navigate back to your page and create the element "File links" via "Typical page content".

3. Within the File Links content element, you can now select the files you have previously uploaded via "Add Files".

4. The added files now appear in the frontend, these can be downloaded/opened by the page visitor. Via the "Appearance" grid, you can also customize the view and, for example, display file size, description and preview image (See video).

File collections

Advantages of file collections:

  • Can be dynamic
  • Can be included by third parties
  • With the combination of "file collection "and "file links" you can e.g. display all downloads from a directory of your "file list".
  • Using file collections saves effort and time!

The following video supports you additionally in the use of "file collections".

Instruction

1. File collections are data sets that must first be created within a folder.

2. After you have created the folder, switch to the "List" module and create a new record.

Below "System records" you will find the "File collection". Now create it.

3. Now you can give your collection a title. Select as "type" the option "folder from storage", this selection allows you to include internal and external storage. By default the "fileadmin" is available as "file storage", select it. As "Folder" now select the folder you created before.

4. You must now insert the new file collection via the "File links" content element (see instructions above).

Within the "File Links" element, however, you now select "File Collection" instead of "Add File".

5. In the opened selection window you now navigate to the previously created file collection, via the plus symbol you can select it.

6. All files in the selected folder will now appear in the frontend.

7. Within the field "Sort file list", you can sort your file list according to any criteria. Within the field "Target", you can select whether the file should be opened in a new window.
