Since 1998, the RHRZ has been using TSM for backup (data protection) for all existing platforms (such as Linux, AIX, Solaris, Windows etc.).
In addition to this RHRZ-internal importance, TSM (Tivoli Storage Manager, a product of IBM) is a software package for centralized data backup of the decentralized computers used on campus (department servers, workstations/PCs). Within the scope of this client-server application, only one "TSM client" must be installed on (almost) any computer. This client uses the campus network to access the "TSM servers" (client programs are available for "almost" all platforms).
These servers manage the data to be backed up and, if necessary, store them in the robot-supported tape archive. The "robot" is a device of the IBM company and belongs to the TotalStorage 3500 series.
So much for a rough description of TSM.
System administrators who are involved in data backup tasks and are interested in such a service should contact hotline(at)rhrk.uni-kl.de.
