End of Life (EOL) products

Windows 10 and Office 2016/2019

General information

Support for the following Microsoft products ends on October 14, 2025

  • Windows 10
  • Microsoft Office 2016 and 2019

After this date, these versions will no longer receive security updates from Microsoft. To ensure secure and stable IT operations at RPTU, a timely upgrade to Windows 11 and a current version of Office (MS365) is required.

The use of Windows 10 devices by employees after 14.10.2025 is prohibited.

Information for: Central administration

In central administration, the upgrade is carried out centrally by the computer center (RHRZ). Coordination and scheduling is carried out by the line managers of the respective organizational units. All current Windows 10 devices will be replaced by a rolling upgrade or exchanged for new devices.

Further information on this will be announced in good time.

Information for: Facilities at RPTU

Institutions that are not managed by the RHRZ are responsible for upgrading to Windows 11 themselves.

Please note:
computers that no longer receive the latest security updates (e.g. Windows 10) may no longer be operated for IT security reasons. Exceptions for research facilities or special systems are of course possible - after consultation with the RHRZ.

After the end of support on October 14, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates - the operation of outdated devices therefore poses a considerable risk, as compromised systems can endanger not only your own security, but also that of others. Furthermore, it is foreseeable that certain programs - such as Microsoft Teams - will also stop supporting Windows 10. This can lead to compatibility problems and usage restrictions. We therefore advise you to switch to Windows 11 in good time.

Technical requirements

Windows 11 has higher hardware requirements than previous versions. It is therefore possible that older devices are no longer compatible. Please therefore check in good time whether your devices support Windows 11.

You can easily find out whether your device is suitable for Windows 11 with the "PC Integrity Check" tool. Download the tool from the official Microsoft website and install it on your device. After starting the program, click on the "Check now" button. The tool will show you directly whether your device meets the requirements for Windows 11.

As part of the service offer for switching to Windows 11, the RZ Service Center can support you in assessing your hardware. The upgrade can be carried out using the installation media provided in the service portal.

Note:
If a new purchase is necessary, please allow sufficient time for procurement and commissioning!

Office 2016 & 2019

Support for Office 2016 and 2019 will also end on October 14, 2025. Outdated Office versions pose a security risk - especially in e-mail traffic and when processing external files.

All students and employees at RPTU can obtain a free license for Microsoft 365 (MS365) from the RHRZ. The current Office version is part of this package and is updated regularly. You can find instructions on how to obtain Office free of charge from us under our software services.
