What is an Active Directory?

The Active Directory (AD) is a directory service that simplifies network administration and makes it clearer thanks to its tree structure. A directory service is a shared, standardized database that provides information about the users, computers, printers, etc. available in the network.

Active Directory - for RPTU account holders

Every RPTU account holder receives access to the RHRZ AD when their account is activated. The data in the "My Documents" folder and the user profile are stored centrally on a server and are therefore available on every computer that is integrated into the AD. Standard software and special software are therefore available on the publicly accessible computers.

Active Directory - for departments, institutes or working groups

The Regional University Computer Center (RHRZ) centrally operates an Active Directory domain for the university. Substructures are mapped with organizational units (OU), the administration of which can be delegated to the relevant responsible persons (OU admins).

This makes the AD particularly interesting for department/institute or workgroup administrators, as the administrative effort of a Windows network environment is significantly reduced by the central administration of connected resources. Integration into the RHRZ's AD eliminates the need to operate your own domain controller/DNS server and your own user administration. Thanks to the flexible delegation of administration rights to the administrator of the organizational unit, the latter can still carry out all administrative tasks independently.

The Active Directory domain can be used free of charge by the department/institute or workgroup administrators.
