Digital certificates based on the X.509 standard are used for secure communication on the Internet. S/Mime certificates can be used to digitally sign and/or encrypt emails. Server certificates are used to encrypt connections between workstations and web or mail servers.

The RHRZ offers various DFN-PKI services for applying for and issuing certificates. The respective certification guidelines of the DFN-PKI and the services offered apply.

The following certificates can be applied for:

Personal user certificates contain the name and e-mail address of the certificate holder and can be used for the electronic signature and encryption of e-mails. The user certificates are also suitable for the electronic signature of PDF documents.
