Citavi
Citavi is a program for literature management and knowledge organization.
Citavi supports students and researchers in all steps of working with scientific literature. It starts with research. Citavi opens the door to over 4000 library catalogs and subject bibliographies, whose data can be saved for further processing with a single click. And even if you have books piled up on your desk, you don't have to type out the titles. If the books have an ISBN (International Standard Book Number) - all books since 1980 have one - this number is sufficient and Citavi retrieves all the necessary information from the Internet: Author, title, publisher, year and often also the cover graphic and a short summary.
Citalivi runs under Windows. You can find some tips on installing it on Mac here.
RPTU has concluded a campus license agreement with Citavi for the use of rental licenses.
The last contract of the TU Kaiserslautern ended on 31.12.2022. Since 01.01.2023 there is a 3-year contract for the RPTU (Kaiserslautern and Landau).
Who is entitled to use this software?
- We provide Citavi free of charge to students and employees at RPTU and IVW. These are single-user installations. Please download the software directly from Citavi via Shibboleth as described below.
- For licensing reasons, other persons and institutions may not use this software provided by us. In this case, please contact your software supplier directly.
Notes on CitaviWeb:
We had already included CitaviWeb in our maintenance contract on a trial basis until 31.12.2022. Since 01.01.2023 we offer CitaviWeb for the next 3 years.
Since the storage location of Citavi data will no longer be in Germany in the future, we would like to expressly point out the following points in connection with the cloud functions:
- Although we do not advise against using Citavi6 (and subsequent versions), we do advise against using the cloud functions in these software versions.
- We do not recommend that you edit your projects in the Citavi Cloud.
- We do not recommend saving your projects in the Citavi Cloud; instead, you should save your projects locally.
- When using the cloud functions, please note that your Citavi account data and your Citavi project data will be stored entirely in the Microsoft Azure data centers in Dublin and Amsterdam from October 3, 2018.
- We would like to expressly point out that anyone who uses the Citavi cloud functions in any way is responsible for doing so.
You can obtain all versions provided by Citavi via the following Shibboleth link.
If you are unable to access the Citavi portal via this Shibboleth link, there may be a problem with the Citavi portal. In this case, please try one of the workarounds described below.
Current CITAVI problem since the beginning of January 2022: important notes on using CITAVI
Since the beginning of 2022 we have had a massive CITAVI problem, this is a major problem on the CITAVI side.
This was triggered by changes made by CITAVI in their database and cloud system at the beginning of January.
To solve this problem, CITAVI provided us with an extended workaround solution on 10.03.2022.
The final solution from CITAVI may not be available until the next CITAVI version in May or June 2022.
Temporary workaround(s):
- Please do NOT use the Shibboleth link above at this time
A. Create a new account:
1. go to https://www.citavi.com/login and click on "Set up now" - DO NOT click on the "Continue with university" button.
2. enter e-mail (if you belong to a university: use university e-mail!).
3. confirm account and set password.
4 If your university does NOT use Shibboleth, your Citavi license will be activated when you confirm your university email.
A.1 Special case Shibboleth for universities that use this method:
1. log in to your account by going back to https://www.citavi.com/login - DO NOT click on the "Continue with university" button.
2. if the Citavi Web start window opens, click on the button with the three horizontal dots at the top right and select "Citavi Account".
3. in the next window, click on "More accounts" in the right-hand column and select the "My university" button
4. enter the name of your university and then log in with your university ID via Shibboleth. The Shibboleth access will be added to your account and the Citavi license will be activated.
B. Log in to a newly created or existing account via the web:
1. go to https://www.citavi.com/login and enter the e-mail address used to create the account - DO NOT click on the "Continue with University" button.
2. enter your password
C. Log in to an existing account via the web, but the password is not known:
1. go to https://www.citavi.com/login and enter the e-mail address used for creation - DO NOT click on the "Continue with University" button.
2. click on "Forgot password" in the next window, then a verification code will be sent to the e-mail address.
3. as soon as this code has been entered, you can assign a new password.
D. Log in to Citavi 6 in the start window:

- As soon as the Shibboleth access from CITAVI is correctly linked to the CITAVI user account again, we will inform all "open tickets" about the CITAVI problem again.
- If you are still able to work with CITAVI using the above workaround, please contact us via our ticket system.
There is also a quick guide on how to use Citavi.
Citavi may be installed by the respective licensee with a single license as often as desired on all devices used by him personally. An additional license is only required if different Citavi versions (e.g. Citavi 5 and Citavi 6) are installed. In this case, a license for older Citavi versions can be requested in the Citavi Account under "License" by clicking on the plus sign "New license".
Citavi can also be installed in pool rooms as a network license. In this case, please contact our ticket system.
If you have problems installing Citavi on Windows, please check that you have installed the latest Microsoft .NET Framework for your operating system.
RHRK does not offer support for the content of this software.
