Rangee - VPN (Wireguard)

A secure connection to the TU Kaiserslautern network via a so-called "Virtual Private Network" (VPN) is only necessary if you want to access certain TUK servers from outside the university network, e.g. from your home office.

If you have a LAN or WLAN connection to the university network with your Rangee client at your workplace on the campus in Kaiserslautern or Landau, a VPN connection is generally not required and should therefore not be used.

Disconnect the VPN connection if you do not need it temporarily.

Avoid a simultaneous connection to different VPNs (e.g. VPN TUK and VPN Koblenz), as undesirable interactions cannot be ruled out in this case.

VPN setup

The VPN connection to the RPTU must be set up once by the user .
If you have taken over the device from another person, please first check whether a WireGuard VPN connection has already been set up and delete it if necessary, see section "Deleting the VPN connection".

Login with master access data

Log in with the following user account: (Pay special attention to the lower case letters.)

User: administrator
Password: rangee12345qwertz

A pop-up confirms that you are now logged in with the master access data.

Close the notification window by clicking OK.

Start VPN setup

Click on the Rangee symbol at the bottom left and select the "VPN setup" entry in the "Rangee Browser" folder.

Please note that this menu item only appears for ZV devices if the device is set up for ADA (home office).
If you have any questions, please contact our support team.

The website(https://www.rhrk.uni-kl.de/vpnwg/) will open, where you can create a VPN configuration.

Create and download VPN configuration

Note: This step must be carried out again for each new device. It is not possible to use the same VPN configuration on several devices at the same time.

Log in with your RPTU account (without @rhrk.uni-kl.de) and agree to the transfer of your user name to our VPN website by clicking on "Accept". This forwarding is technically necessary in order to assign your VPN configurations to your RPTU account and thus check your VPN authorizations.

You will now be taken to the profile overview.

Select "Full Tunnel" from the drop-down menu on the left and enter the name of your device in the field below as the name for the profile and then click on "Create".
(You will find the name of your device on a sticker on the device. As a rule, the name begins with "ZV-RC-", followed by 5 digits, which are divided again by a hyphen).

For workstations on the Landau campus, where a VPN connection to the University of Koblenz is also required, "Split Tunnel" must be selected.

A pop-up opens to download the configuration.

Click on the "Download Config" button to automatically import the configuration into the pre-installed Wireguard client.

Then click on the "Close" button.

The web browser is no longer required and can now also be closed using the x in the top right-hand corner of the browser window.

At the bottom right of the taskbar, the network icon (or the WLAN icon, if applicable) now has a padlock to show you the existing VPN connection.

Restart

After successfully setting up the VPN connection, restart the device. To do this, click on the Rangee icon at the bottom left and select "Restart".

Disconnect/reconnect VPN connection

The VPN connection is automatically re-established on restart.

If you do not need a VPN connection, you can simply disconnect it via the network options and then re-establish it.

To do this, click on the network icon (or the Wi-Fi icon) at the bottom right of the taskbar and select "VPN connections".

Remove the tick in front of "Wireguard" to terminate the VPN connection.
Checkthe box again to re-establish the connection.

Deleting the VPN connection

It may be necessary to delete the established VPN connection and set it up again.

This may be necessary, for example, before handing over the device to other employees or if the VPN configuration on the RHRZ website has been deleted unintentionally.

Proceed as follows.

Click on the network icon (or the WLAN icon, if applicable) at the bottom right of the taskbar

and select the sub-item "Configure VPN ..."under "VPN connections".

The "Network connections" window opens.

Under "WireGuard",select the VPN configuration you wish to delete and click on the button with the minus sign at the bottom left.

Confirm the deletion process by clicking on "Delete".

The network icon (or the WLAN icon) at the bottom right of the taskbar is now displayed again without the padlock.

Close the "Network connections" window using the x in the top right-hand corner of the window.

The VPN connection can now be set up again.
