Video conferencing with the Jitsi tool

Jitsi is an open source video conferencing application with high quality and low latency.

The application was developed for ad-hoc video conferences. The more participants you have on a call, the more resources you will need for your hardware.

For optimal use, it is recommended to limit the total number of participants to six.

If you are planning a conference with more than 6 participants, you should keep the use of video and audio streaming to a minimum.

Note: The RHRZ operates the Jitsi server, but cannot provide support for your conferences. Thank you for your understanding.

Please only use Jitsi with the Google Chrome web browser or a Chrome-based browser or with the client app available for Android and iOS.

If you use other browsers, the entire video conference may malfunction.

Only use the Chrome browser or the Jitsi client to prevent disruptions that could affect all participants.

Remote access to your Windows working environment

Use our Windows remote desktop server to display and work with your Windows working environment on your PC or laptop.

The RHRZ provides Windows servers on which you can also work remotely. The programs are executed on the server, the display and control takes place on your own device.(Remote Desktop)

The Windows remote desktop servers or terminal servers offer every RPTU account holder access to their own user environment with their personal home directory.

For remote access to their personal Windows desktop, students can use the terminal servers at"win-ts.edu.rptu.de". Employees log in at "win-ts.rptu.de", employees of the central administration at"win-ts.zv.rptu.de".

To connect to the servers from off campus, establish the remote desktop connection to "win-ts.edu.rptu.de", "win-ts.rptu.de" or "win-ts.zv.rptu.de" via the gateway server rdsgate.uni-kl.de. A VPN connection is not required for this.

Employees of the central administration (ZV) can also access special administration software (such as HIS or MACH C/S) from off campus. You can find out how to do this in an additional Instructions for ZV employees.

Guide for ZV employees

If you are using a work laptop , please use it from home as usual (with a VPN connection at RPTU).
Alternatively, you can also proceed as described under "Are you otherwise working on a PC?".

If your workstation on campus has been switched to a PC in the last few months, please use the address ts.uni-kl.de as described in the instructions for access from outside to connect from your Windows PC or Mac. This will take you to a working environment similar to your PC, which is configured in the same way as on your PC. However, individual applications are not available.
If you regularly use Citrix applications (e.g. HIS or MACH C/S), please follow theadditional instructions for ZV employeesto access them.

Instructions for access from outside

If you experience problems with the remote desktop connection, please follow the instructions for connecting using the Bitvise SSH client under Windows 10 as an alternative.

Remote access to your Linux working environment

If you want to work under Linux, you can use the LINDA/LINDB terminal server or the Elwetritsch high-performance computer.

VPN is not required in every case.

Linux terminal server LINDA/LINDB

The two Linux terminal servers linda.rhrk.uni-kl.de and lindb.rhrk.uni-kl.de offer a standard Linux desktop (MATE) with the common Linux applications.

All holders of an RPTU account (employees, students, guests of RPTU) are entitled to access.

You have the following options for logging in to the computers:

  • SSH or X2go(VPN connection required)
  • Remote desktop (via the gateway server rdsgate.uni-kl.de without VPN)

For a remote desktop connection from your Linux system, follow the instructions for the Connection via the gateway server (Linux). If you do not establish the connection from a Linux system, please follow the available instructions for connecting to the Windows remote desktop servers under Windows or MacOS. (Replace ts.uni-kl.de with linda.rhrk.uni-kl.de or lindb.rhrk.uni-kl.de).

High-performance computer Elwetritsch

The high-performance computer "Elwetritsch" offers a standard Linux desktop (MATE) with common Linux applications on the login nodes.

Access is possible via SSH, RDP and NX.

In addition, scientific applications such as Abaqus, ANSYS, Hyperworks etc. can be used interactively with OpenGL support and extensive calculations can be carried out via a batch system.

Employees at RPTU are entitled to access. Students can also be granted access by a member of staff via the RHRZ service portal.

VPN - Access to services on the network at RPTU

To access a few RPTU IT services from home , your computer or laptop must become part of the RPTU network. This is done with the WireGuard software, which establishes a so-called VPN connection or VPN tunnel. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. Data is exchanged between your computer and the network at RPTU in encrypted form via a "tunnel".
