Instructions for: SMIME certificates

General information

Secure your e-communication by integrating personal S/MIME certificates. In this guide, you will learn step by step how to integrate your certificates to encrypt and digitally sign emails. By using S/MIME, you increase the confidentiality and authenticity of your messages, protect sensitive data and ensure the integrity of your communication.

 

Prerequisites
  • You have a valid user certificate
  • You have added the corresponding e-mail account in Thunderbird

Step by step

Outlook
Step 1: Opening the account settings
  • Open Thunderbird
  • Click on the context menu in the top right corner and select the option"Account settings".
Step 2: Opening the certificate management
  • Select the tab of the e-mail address for which you have requested the certificate
  • Click on the menu item"End-to-end encryption"
  • Click on the"ManageS/MIME certificates" button
Step 3: Importing the certificate into certificate management
  • In the newly opened window, click on the"Your certificates" tab
  • Click on"Import"
  • Use the file browser to navigate to the certificate file that you downloaded when you applied for the certificate
  • Open the corresponding file
Step 4: Entering the certificate password

In the following window, enter the password of the certificate and click on "OK"

Step 5: Opening the account settings

To use the certificate, you must now select it for both the digital signature and the encryption.

Select the certificate for under SMIME in the account settings:

  • Digital signing
  • Encryption

The default settings for sending messages can be found under the certificate selection. Please set the settings as shown in the illustration below.

Step 6: Applying the certificates

When you compose a new email, you will find the option to encrypt the message by clicking on"S/MIME".

Automatic signing has already been preset in point 6.
