Obituary for Prof. Dr. Paul Müller

We bid farewell to our colleague from the Department of Computer Science and former director of the Kaiserslautern Regional University Computer Center, Professor Dr. Paul Müller, who passed away on June 6, 2026, at the age of 77. In 1995, Paul Müller moved from the University of Ulm to Kaiserslautern and, until his retirement, fulfilled the dual role of professor in the Department of Computer Science and director of the computer center with tireless dedication.

Through his research, Paul Müller helped shape the technological development of network infrastructures and broadband communication early on—at a time when the World Wide Web was just emerging. He played a key role in driving its further development. Numerous externally funded research projects—ranging from communication networks to topics we would today classify as cloud computing—underscore the depth of his scientific work.

Particularly noteworthy was his understanding of computer science as a discipline that has an impact not only through publications but also on society. Together with his team, he supported companies and public institutions in tackling major technological challenges—from resolving the Y2K problem and the introduction of the euro to building innovative IT infrastructures for the Westpfalzklinikum. Several startups emerged from his circle.

At the University of Kaiserslautern, in his role as director of the computer center, he was among those who contributed significantly to the expansion of the university’s technical infrastructure. His tenure included, among other things, the establishment of one of the first supercomputers as part of the German Alliance for High-Performance Computing, as well as the development of the university’s fiber-optic network in the early days of this then-nascent technology.

Paul Müller was a person who, with his natural and endearing manner, laid the groundwork upon which others could build. We have lost a highly competent, dedicated, and humorous colleague. He leaves behind a great void, both professionally and personally. We will always remember him fondly as a colleague, researcher, and university professor, known for his open and approachable nature.

We extend our sincere condolences to his family and wish them the strength they need during this difficult time.
