WLAN for devices without a main user

As a rule, you establish the connection to the WLAN on your devices via your personal RPTU account.

If this is not possible in exceptional cases, e.g. because a measuring device requires WLAN access independently of a person, the RHRZ offers various options, some of which are subject to a charge.

Instructions for setting up WLAN with your RPTU account can be found under Campus WLAN.

Function account for eduroam

For devices that cannot be assigned to a specific person but still require internet access via WLAN, you can apply for a function account to use eduroam.

To do this, go to the RPTU account management and apply for a staff account. In this case, please enter "Funktionsaccount eduroam" in the Comment ("Bemerkung") field.

As soon as the function account has been created and activated, please send an email to RHRZ support with all MAC addresses that are to use this account in the future. Do not forget to mention the account name of the function account.

The RHRZ will then register these MAC addresses for the account and subsequently assign the eduroam authorization.

Suitable end devices

There are WLAN-enabled end devices that do not support 802.1x ("WPA Enterprise") (e.g. projectors, TV sets, media boxes, Google Glass...). If such devices are to be used via WLAN outside the reception range of the "new WLAN solution" (if the WLAN "RPTU Guest PSK" cannot be received), WLAN access via an access point with pre-shared key is the only option.

IoT WLAN

For devices that do not support 802.1x ("WPA Enterprise"), MAC-bound access via WPA2 is possible in the reception area of the "new WLAN solution" (if the WLAN "RPTU Guest PSK" can be received).

Please contact RHRZ support by email and state the intended use and the MAC addresses of the devices that require access.

The number of network-enabled devices is growing. The term "Internet of Things (IoT)" describes the network of physical objects ("things") that are networked with other devices and systems via the Internet so that data can be exchanged between the objects independently of interaction with people.

PSK Access Point (Pre-Shared Key)

As an alternative to using eduroam, you can use an additional WLAN access point for a fee, to which the authorized persons/devices log in with a previously defined character string ("WLAN key" or "WLAN password") of up to 63 characters.

You can find more information on this under New Access Point.
